The fashion industry is a multibillion-dollar, worldwide endeavor dedicated to producing fashion and is responsible for how the population receives their apparel (Britannica.com). The fashion industry is a fast-paced, never-ending business that deals with basically every aspect of life and does not discriminate who it caters to.
My topic consists of an undeniable collaboration between the fashion industry and media. Smaller social media sites instantaneous feedback and publicity tactics have captured high-end department store, Neiman Marcus’ attention (Huffingtonpost.com). The biggest aspect of social media’s effect on the fashion industry would be the vital role technology plays in our everyday life. As Alex Garcia, a BLOOM blog analyst stated, a trend that numerous brands are taking to is the use of Twitter to be seen and engage their customers (bloomworldwide.com). That being said, the fashion industry has been able to prosper through the use of media advertisements, online stores and social media sites. Within the 21st century, the fashion industry has proved to be accountable for employing one of the biggest portions of the population (Britannica.com). Pinterest, “a site that curates looks from popular items pinned by brands, designers, and your friends,” experienced a 320% rise in visitors from December 2011 to December 2012 (mashable.com).
This media movement has made fashion more accessible and therefore boosted sales. Now, people who are not employed by the fashion industry share their style on blogs, Instagram, Twitter and several other sites. In fact, before this year’s New York Fashion Week, brands such as Bergdorf Goodman and Badgley Mischka debuted their lines solely on Pinterest (mashable.com). This idea has reached an ample amount of companies. Another interesting aspect is that fashion shows are being streamed through YouTube, UStream, and Livestream (mashable.com). In conclusion, the fashion industry, as we know it today, could not thrive without the contributions of social media.
