The purpose of this interview was to further my knowledge regarding social media in the fashion industry. I did so through questionnaire with an expert. Going into this interview, I had hopes that I would become more aware of media outlets fashion professionals use and gain an idea as to how fashion students utilize social networking forums. I also wanted to inquire more exciting information to include in my final presentation.
With the help of Jordan Shramek, a freshman at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, I was able to broaden my intelligence about social media’s reputation in the world of fashion. I was introduced to Jordan about four years ago, when we attended the same high school. She can be contacted, the same way I reached out to her, via phone at: 1-402-203-6058.
Although I found everything Jordan had to say in our thirty-minute Skype call very helpful, I would say two points intrigued me most. First, she explained that New York has introduced these vending machines that scan your face and immediately recommend products best suited for you, something I never thought possible. I can only imagine that this idea will soon expand to be scanning your body shape and providing suggestions for the most flattering clothing.
Secondly, we discussed the presence of “brick and mortar” stores. Jordan expressed feelings that these physical showrooms will only stick around until Generation Y is the eldest; then, stores will be strictly technology based. This surprised me because I thought physically shopping would never go out of style. As an example, she said that New Yorkers can order their groceries from the comfort of their home and have them delivered directly to their door shortly after. I believe something similar is soon to follow with the fashion industry.
I found my source to be credible because of her real life experiences. At the Fashion Institute she is taught by professionals who have been plucked directly from the industry. She also gave me examples of how staying up-to-date is a requirement for her classes. Therefore, I think her credibility is backed-up with teaching lessons and helpful opinions on how social media is changing the fashion industry as we know it.
The most interesting follow-up question was about her 92 year-old professor who has been teaching at F.I.T. from the start. Since I based the majority of questions off of Jordan’s personal experiences at school, she provided me with insight on how she and other students integrate social media into their studies. Our talk ensured that the fashion industry is positively evolving with the help of social media.
